Saint Guilhem le Désert

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Go discover this gorgeous authentic medieval village during your holiday at the Les Mimosas campsite *****. It is located about 72 km north of the establishment and you can be there in 58 minutes if you take highway A75.

An important stop for pilgrims on their way to St Jacques de Compostelle, Saint Guilhem le Desert is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France and a Grand Site de France®. And these labels are well deserved. Coming around the bend, you catch sight of it, snuggled between the staggering cliffs of the Val de Gellone. The village is most impressive in the evening, when the rays of the setting sun touch the golden rocks of the abbey.

Saint Guilhem le Desert was built starting in the 9th century. The plane tree 6 m in circumference in the center of Liberty Plaza was planted in January 1855 and the adjacent fountain dates from 1901. This tourist village welcomes around 800,000 visitors per year. Among its architectural heritage of which the islanders are so proud, features the Abbaye de Gellone constructed in the 12th century where the true cross and relics of Saint Guilhem are housed and for which the abbey was built. This jewel of Roman Languedoc art is a UNESCO world heritage site.
